The Length of Stay Abroad Using Overseas IVF Clinics

Nine Days Abroad with IVF Cycle Using Local OBGYN

Unlike Europeans, Americans do not typically have 28 days of vacation per year. A typical IVF protocol would require a 17-day stay abroad. Consequently, the length of the required stay has been one of the biggest impediments for Americans who don’t have long vacations, but wish to have their IVF treatments done overseas. Although MedVacation fertility doctors would prefer our clients to stay in their clinics for the entire IVF cycle, some patients may reduce the number of days spent abroad by way of initial ovulation stimulation by a local OBGYN doctor. Here is how the process works, when MedVacation's IVF clinics are “minimally” involved.

Since our fertility doctors are located outside the United States, patients in the U.S. could use their local OBGYN practice for certain procedures in the beginning of the cycle. The U.S. OBGYN doctors could administer fertility drugs to do the ovulation induction (to stimulate the multiple egg production), as well as monitor the progress (e.g. ultrasounds exams). Our doctors will work closely with yours to get everything ready for the next step. Since your fertility treatments will start on the first day of your menstrual cycle, you can spend the first seven days at home. We would require you, however, to travel on the eighth day, so that our doctors could see you on the ninths day. On the ninth day our fertility specialist will perform an ultrasound test and do some blood work that day.

fertility-treatments-specialistsWhen you are ready, our doctors will harvest eggs, perform fertilization (e.g. ICSI) and carry out the transfer. After the transfer is completed, you can return to the U.S. and the local office will continue maintaining and monitoring the pregnancy. In this scenario, our clients would spend a total of nine days outside the U.S.

If the patient is using an egg donor, the length of stay abroad is even shorter. Since embryologist will need the sperm on the twelfth day of the cycle, the couple should plan traveling to our clinic on the eleventh day and be at our clinic the following day for sperm retrieval.

You may return home 2-3 days after the embryo transfer. Our work does not end here though. Before you leave our clinic, you will be instructed to purchase injectables, estrogen tablets and suppository medicine to support the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy. Post-transfer medications from our clinics’ pharmacies cost half as much as they do in the U.S. Upon your return to your home town, you will schedule a number of appointments with either a perinatologist or an Ob doctor. Our fertility doctors will continue monitoring you and work very closely with your local doctor during these 12 weeks. They are also available for a free consultation any time after that.

We would also like to address the issue of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome or OHSS. The medications used to stimulate your ovaries may cause side effects. Excessive stimulation of the ovaries is called ovarian hyperstimulation. These side effects can range from mild to severe. In case of severe hyperstimulation, it is not advised for the patient to travel by air. Fortunately, hyperstimulation can be prevented in most cases. On the fourth day of your treatments, your local OBGYN doctor will perform an ultrasound and do estradial blood tests. At this stage, based on the test results, your doctor will adjust the dose of your medication in order to avoid hyperstimulation. Moreover, this condition is less prevalent in female patients over 35.
