Freezing Sperm

How much does it cost to freeze sperm?

freeze-spermThere is a number of reasons why men freeze their sperm. Commonly, men turn to our fertility clinics with a request to freeze their sperm, because they are diagnosed with some illness that may have an effect on their ability to have children. For example, many younger males, who have been diagnosed with testicular cancer, choose to freeze sperm prior to undergoing their cancer treatments.

A recent study conducted in 2012 reveals that the age of the father at the time of conception affects the health of his offspring. This new discovery turns conventional thinking on its head. Historically, doctors believed that although male fertility declines with age, it didn’t decline significantly enough in most men to render them infertile. The new study claims that although older men are still capable of conceiving a child, they produce more gene mutations in children they father. This, in turn, boosts their children’s risk of schizophrenia, autism and possibly other diseases. This is another reason why men may consider freezing sperm earlier in life.

Unlike freezing eggs, freezing sperm is a relatively inexpensive and simple process. It typically requires a brief visit to our fertility clinic and a half an hour to produce sperm specimen. Our IVF clinics use the latest cryopreservation technology called Vitrification, which dramatically increases cryosurvival (percentage of sperm that is alive after thawing) of sperm. In the past, fertility clinics utilized the slow freezing method that has been used since the 1980’s. With Vitrification, the temperature is lowered at 23,000 degrees C° per minute. That is 70,000 times faster than in traditional approach. Such rapid cooling coupled with cryoprotactant fluids prevents formation of ice crystals in sperm, which negatively affects the quality of frozen sperm.

The total cost of all procedures associated with freezing sperm (sperm collection, preparation for cryopreservation and the actual freezing) and the storage for the first year is $800.
