Progesterone levels above 30 are ideal but do not guarantee success of IVF treatments
Your progesterone level will fluctuate after your IVF treatments. Nevertheless, fertility specialists all agree that during natural conception the level of progesterone must be 15 or higher. The peak occurs seven days after one’s ovulation. Interestingly, when progesterone levels fall to 2-4, you will start your menstrual cycle.
After your in vitro fertilization treatments, your progesterone will be higher than 15, because you will be taking medication to increase your levels of progesterone. Our fertility doctors want to have progesterone levels higher than 30. You will be instructed to do a few tests after you return home, and our fertility doctors will adjust your progesterone medication (e.g. oral, vaginal suppositories, or injections) based on your test results.
Without doubt, progesterone is critical because it prepares the lining of your uterus (endometrium) for implantation of your embryo(s). However, having high level of progesterone does not mean that you are pregnant. In addition, high level of progesterone does not even guarantee you will have good endometrium. Having said that, high level of progesterone is a good sign. Basically, if you progesterone is high, your embryo(s) has higher chances of finding more “favorable” area to implant.
