Results of Semen Analysis

Help Me Understand The Results of My Semen Analysis

So, you did your semen analysis and received your results back. Now you are probably wondering what all those numbers mean. We will be happy to help you understand the results of your lab work. Sperm quality depends on several factors. The report that you will receive from the lab will have three main columns or sections: concentration, motility, and morphology. Here is what these terms mean.

Concentration simply means quantity of sperm. Your ejaculate, the semen discharged in a single ejaculation, must contain certain amount of sperm per ml. The normal range for sperm is between 20 and 250 million sperm per ml of semen. You are more likely to be fertile, if your ejaculate contains more than 35 million sperm. However, a low sperm count does not absolutely preclude fertility. Sperm counts fluctuate from day to day and are affected by abstinence.

Motility denotes the percentage of the sperm that is moving. To reach the egg, sperm must move on their own in order to reach and penetrate the egg. You're most likely to conceive, if more than 50 percent of your sperm are moving.

The term morphology means quality. That is, your sperm should be normally shaped. You're most likely to be fertile, if more than five percent of your sperm have a normal shape and structure. A normal sperm has an oval head and a long tail. It should not have any holes in the head. Sperm with large, small, tapered or crooked heads or kinky, curled or double tails are less likely to fertilize an egg.

If your semen analysis falls short of any of the above stated numbers, there are some things men can do to improve the quality of their sperm.

If you have not done a semen analysis yet and need to schedule an appointment, contact your OB/GYN and ask for a referral to an IVF clinic in your area. This test can also be preformed in our clincs for a fee of $30, if it makes the process easier.
