Ear Surgery for Children

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)Procedure for Children

Otoplasty, also commonly referred to as ear surgery, is a procedure that helps reduce protrusion of the ear away from the head. This procedure involves reshaping of the cartilage and repositioning of the body of the ear.

General Procedure
Correction of protruding ears is done through surgical techniques toEar Surgery create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). The procedure is performed either with local or under general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you. Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. Internal, non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place. External stitches close the incision.

Recovery Process
Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. Complications following this type of surgery are uncommon and usually minimal. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery. This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. Bandages are applied right after surgery to aid the healing process. The bandages are usually removed within a week and replaced with smaller dressings. Even though you are going to be staying at a tropical destination, after the surgery you will not be able to swim in the ocean or be in direct sunlight.
