Breast Enlargement in Men and Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is the abnormal development of mammary glands resulting in excessively large breasts in males. Male breast enlargement can be caused by increase in the volume of glandular tissue and chest body fat. Typically, it is a combination of both. Gynecomastia is fairly common. Unlike women who feel comfortable talking to one another about breast augmentation and liposuction, men do not talk about gynecomastia. The good news is that this condition can be effectively treated with surgery.
There are several types of gynecomastia. The most common form is puffy nipples. This glandular tissue enlargement is concentrated around the areola. Pure glandular gynecomastia occurs in lean men and is typically an enlargement of only glandular tissue with little or no fat deposits around it. Pseudogynecomastia is categorized by presence of fat tissue only and is not caused by growth of the glandular tissue. Gynecomastia in most adults is caused by glandular tissue but may also contain varying degrees of fat and fibrous tissue.
Each type of gynecomastia requires a unique treatment approach. In some cases, the patient will require only a liposuction around the breast area. In other cases, the condition may require a gland removal and liposuction. In case of severe gynecomastia, your plastic surgeon will perform a liposuction, remove the glad, and also do a skin adjustment. The easiest way to determine which approach may be the best for you is by sharing a photograph with our plastic surgeon.
