Follicular Growth

Follicle Growth in IVF

Some IVF patients may need more than 10 days of IVF medications due to slower response by ovaries.

A typical IVF cycle will require 10 days of medication. The follicular growth should improve with each day of stimulation. However, all IVF patients respond differently to stimulation and some may respond at slower pace. That is, the size of patient’s follicles may not be where they should be for that particular cycle day. This does not mean that your IVF doctors will cancel your cycle. Our fertility specialist will closely monitor your progress and adjust your medications. This, in turn, means that you may require a few additional days of drug treatments.

Our doctors may increase your dose of Gonal F. For instance, you may be instructed to continue with a daily dose of Gonal F 300iu, HMG 150iu and 10 units of Lupron. If your body responds better, our doctors will extend the length of your treatments. This means that instead of 10 days of medications, you may be required to take medication for 13 to 15 days.

The follicles cannot be aspirated until they are at least 18mm in size, because the eggs within the follicles will not mature. We cannot perform ICSI on an immature egg, as it will not fertilize.
