Liposuction Body-Sculpting Procedure for Men and Women
Lipoplasty, commonly referred to as liposuction, is the third most common plastic surgery procedure performed in the U.S. Liposuction involves removing excess fat tissue. This body-sculpting procedure reshapes body contours and creates a slimmer appearance. Liposuction is often effectively used get rid of love handles, saddlebags, a double-chin and a bulge around the waistline. Liposuction can be performed alone, but is be often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a tummy tuck. Liposuction is not an effective treatment for obesity. Individuals who consider liposuction should be healthy and relatively fit, have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone, and be within 30% of their ideal weight.
Depending on the extent of the procedure and the technique used, liposuction surgery may last between a half an hour and five hours. The extent of the procedure and the amount of fat that is removed will determine what type of anesthesia is used. Your doctor may recommend general anesthesia or administer local anesthesia in conjunction with IV sedation. After you are sedated, the surgeon may make single or multiple incisions below the bikini line or in the navel. The surgeon may also choose to make incisions at alternative sites, depending on the procedure. These sites are selected in the contours of the body so that scars are well hidden.
There are several different liposuction techniques. The tumescent technique is the most commonly used liposuction procedure. Prior to removing fat, tumescent fluid is injected into the treatment area through a large hollow device known as a cannula. This solution, which is composed of saline solution, lidocaine, and epinephrine, helps to numb the treatment area, control blood loss, and facilitate fat removal.
Following the injection of tumescent fluid, the surgeon will insert the liposuction cannula into the fat layer beneath your skin. Using a forward and backward motion, the surgeon will use the cannula to loosen and break apart the fat tissue in the area. A suction device, such as a surgical vacuum that has been attached to the opposite end of the cannula, is then used to suction the loose fat. Although some incisions are so small they can heal without stitches, the surgeon will typically close incisions with stitches at the end of surgery.
Immediately after the surgery, you will likely experience some pain, bruising, and swelling, most of which will go away within a few weeks. The pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. Complications following liposuction are uncommon and usually minimal. You will need to wear a compression garment for two to six weeks. A compression garment is tight-fitting, and holds the tissues together, while providing comfort and support as you heal. The compression garment is used to reduce swelling by preventing fluid buildup and to speed up healing.
Even though you are going to be staying at tropical destination, after the surgery you will not be able to swim in the ocean or be in direct sunlight. You will likely be able to return to work in a few days and resume your normal activities in approximately one to two weeks.
The results and an improvement in your appearance are noticeable very soon after surgery. You will observe even greater improvements within four to six weeks following the procedure, as the swelling subsides. The final results will most likely be noticeable in approximately three months. Although fat cells are permanently removed from the treatment area during the procedure, it is important to understand that liposuction does not prevent additional weight gain. In order to maintain the results from your procedure, it is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
