Removing Fibroids Before IVF

Do I need to remove fibroids before my IVF treatments?

The answer to this question is ‘it depends.’ The relationship between uterine fibroids and infertility remains quite a controversial topic. Data from several recent studies does not support pre-IVF myomectomy in women with small-to-moderate uterine fibroids, regardless of their location. Our fertility doctors will need to see a medical report indicating the location of the fibroids and their size, before they can tell you if it is necessary for them to be removed. The best thing to do is to send us your ultrasound. You can either make a copy of the CD and mail it to us or transfer the file via Skype. You can certainly try to email the file to us. However, typically these types of files are rather large. In case our doctors determine you need a surgery to remove your uterine fibroids, the cost of the removal is $2,800.

The surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids is called Myomectomy. There are three types of surgery:

  1. Abdominal myomectomy
  2. Laparoscopic
  3. Hysteroscopic myomectomy

Our surgeons rarely resort to using the first option, abdominal myomectomy, if other two options are available to MedVacation patients. Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries are less invasive, have shorter recovery period and do not leave large scars in the abdominal area.
