IVF with Sperm Donor

IUI ICI Sperm Order from Sperm Bank

Where To Order Sperm
If you need a sperm donor, we offer two options to our fertility patients. Most of our clients choose to order sperm from sperm banks in the U.S. MedVacation fertility clinics work with all major sperm banks in the U.S. By the way, did you know that the U.S. is considered the gold standard of sperm? The most significant advantage of ordering sperm from the U.S. is the ability to view donors’ pictures. Most fertility clinics and cryobanks banks outside the U.S. won’t allow you to view your donor’s pictures. The major advantage of working with a sperm bank outside the U.S. is the cost. If you order your sperm specimen in the U.S., it will add between $1,200 and $1,600 (including shipping cost) to the total cost of your fertility treatments. If you purchase your sperm specimen outside the U.S., the cost of the sperm donor will range between $400 and $500.

Essentially, there are two types of sperm vials available for purchase: intrauterine insemination (IUI) and intracervical insemination (ICI). The only difference between these two vials is IUI is prewashed, while ICI is unwashed. Before IUI samples are frozen, the sperm is washed to remove the seminal plasma (seminal fluids). ICI specimens contain seminal plasma.

Although both types of vials are acceptable for IVF, our fertility doctors recommend you purchase ICI vials. Our fertility clinics prefer to wash the specimen in their own labs and will not charge you for this service. Rewashing an IUI vial is generally not a good idea. Since you don’t need to purchase the premium washed IUI vial, you will actually save money by ordering ICI vials.

Before purchasing your sperm specimen, ask your cryobank what type of freezing technique it used to cryopreserve your sperm. Make sure that your sperm cryobank uses Vitrification to freeze their sperm samples. Although sperm is known to survive freezing better than eggs do, Vitrification dramatically increase cryosurvival of sperm, eggs and embryos.

The quality of your sperm specimen will affect the quality of your embryos and consequently your embryo implantation rates.

Shipping Sperm
When shipping your sperm internationally, allow yourself plenty of time for delivery. We recommend shipping your sperm order at least 14 days prior to the egg retrieval date (fertilization day). Most cryobanks guarantee the safety of their content for 10 days. Basically, they guarantee that the nitrogen filled container will keep the sperm frozen for 10 days. Since all shipments are shipped Next Day Air, it typically won’t take longer than a day or two for the shipment to arrive in the destination country. Nevertheless, our clinic will also need a day or two to clear the shipment through customs. As you can imagine, the best day to ship your order is Monday, since this will ensure our clinics have enough time to take possession of the tank before the weekend.
